For any driver, that kind of experience raises serious questions. Is it safe to carry on? What’s triggered the warnings? And is the problem going to get worse?

Understanding the Blocked DPF Symptoms from the Driver’s Perspective

With the Land Rover now at Marc’s Garage, Lytham St Annes, our first priority was to talk with Mr J and build a complete picture of what had happened. We asked when the warning lights had first shown, how the vehicle had been driving since, and whether there had been any changes to his regular journeys or driving routine.

Frequent short trips with regular stop-start driving are among the leading causes of DPF issues, because the engine never sustains the temperatures needed for regeneration to complete. Establishing Mr J’s typical driving pattern was an important step before any hands-on testing could begin.

With that background gathered, our technicians connected the vehicle to our dealer-level diagnostic equipment and ran a comprehensive system scan. Two of the stored fault codes related directly to the DPF concern:

  • Land Rover P2463 fault code — P2463-00, meaning the engine management system had flagged excessive soot accumulation or restriction in the diesel particulate filter.
  • Land Rover P246B fault code — P246B-00, meaning the conditions required for regeneration were not being reliably met, or that the regeneration process had been cut short repeatedly.

Together, these codes pointed toward DPF issues. However, fault codes alone only tell part of the story. To establish exactly what had triggered the DPF warning and related codes, and to make certain the right repair was carried out, further inspection was needed.

Our technicians began a methodical, step-by-step investigation to uncover the underlying cause.

Tracing the Root Cause of the Land Rover DPF Fault

The fault codes confirmed that the DPF was overloaded with soot and that regeneration was repeatedly failing to complete. However, our technicians needed to establish why the filter had ended up in that state before any repair could be carried out effectively. A Land Rover DPF fault can be triggered by several different factors, and the right repair depends on pinpointing which one is at the root of the problem. Each potential cause was assessed in turn, with one area eliminated before the next was investigated.

Step 1: External DPF Inspection

Our technicians started by assessing whether the DPF itself was still in a condition that could be restored, before looking at the causes of the soot accumulation. A cracked or compromised filter would change the repair approach entirely, potentially requiring replacement rather than cleaning.

Step 2: Oil Level, Condition, and Oil Dilution Check

Oil dilution occurs when DPF regeneration attempts fail to complete. During regeneration, the engine management system introduces additional fuel through late post-injection to raise exhaust gas temperatures. If that cycle doesn’t finish, some of the fuel can wash past the piston rings and into the engine oil rather than being burnt off in the exhaust.

  • Our checks revealed that fuel had diluted the engine oil.
  • Diluted oil degrades over time and can affect overall engine condition, while the ongoing inability to regenerate allowed soot to continue collecting in the DPF with no way for the system to clear it.

With that confirmed, our technicians pressed on with the remaining checks to see whether any additional factors had contributed.

Step 3: Air Filter Condition Check

The air filter was inspected next. A restricted air filter reduces the volume of air entering the engine, which can lower combustion efficiency and increase particulate production. This increases the volume of particulates produced and places a greater load on the DPF over time.

  • Our check confirmed the air filter was in satisfactory condition and not involved.

Step 4: DPF Pressure Readings

Differential pressure across the DPF was measured using our dealer-level diagnostic equipment.

  • The readings came back high, confirming the filter was carrying a significant soot load.
  • This corresponded with the Land Rover P2463 fault code recorded during the initial scan.

Step 5: Boost Leak Assessment

The intake and boost system was then assessed for leaks. A boost leak reduces combustion efficiency and can accelerate the rate at which soot loads the DPF.

  • No evidence of boost leakage was found.

With every check completed, the full picture had come together. The DPF had been unable to regenerate, and soot had built up steadily in the filter as a result. The oil dilution discovered during the inspection was a direct consequence of repeated failed regeneration attempts. That accumulation had eventually reached the threshold where the dashboard warning lights activated, the vehicle went into limp mode, and power was noticeably reduced.

The sensors and related hardware all tested correctly, with nothing found that would have inhibited regeneration, pointing to driving conditions and interrupted regeneration cycles as the most likely cause.

Once the root cause had been confirmed, our technicians contacted Mr J to talk him through the findings and present the repair plan. With his approval, the work got underway.

Engine oil and filter change

Repeated failed regeneration attempts had caused the engine oil to become fuel-diluted, and it was no longer providing adequate engine protection.

  • A complete engine oil and filter change was carried out, with the diluted oil fully removed.
  • The new oil met the correct Land Rover specification for the Discovery Sport’s Ingenium diesel engine, applied in accordance with manufacturer standards.

Diesel particulate filter cleaning

With the oil now replaced, attention moved to the DPF. Having already been confirmed as structurally intact, diesel particulate filter cleaning was performed to reduce the soot load and restore flow through the filter before performing regeneration.

Forced DPF regeneration and system reset

With the cleaning complete, a service regeneration was initiated using the manufacturer-level software.

  • Following the regeneration, relevant DPF adaptation and soot loading values were reset in accordance with manufacturer procedures, ensuring the engine management system could accurately monitor the filter following cleaning and regeneration.
  • The fault memory was cleared and the system retested. No new fault codes appeared.

Customer guidance

On the Ingenium diesel engine, frequent short journeys can prevent DPF regeneration from completing. When regeneration is interrupted, fuel introduced through late post-injection, intended to raise exhaust temperatures for regeneration, can wash past the piston rings. Over time, this leads to oil dilution.
