How to Solve Engine Ignition Fault in an Audi Q5
In the past, cars were less technologically advanced, making it easier for individuals to understand and fix mechanical issues. However, today’s vehicles have a large number of electronically controlled components, controlled by the Engine Control Unit (ECU), making repairs more difficult and requiring specialised training and expertise.
At Marc’s Garage, our technicians are trained and equipped to handle all types of car-related issues, as demonstrated when one of our specialists, Paul, quickly resolved an engine ignition issue on a 2018 Audi Q5 for a customer.
Faults Found
The Audi technician gathered information from Mr G regarding his experience with the Audi Q5 and took notes to assist in the repair. The client reported occasional difficulty starting the engine and the presence of the Check Engine Light on the dash.
The technician verified these complaints by checking the dash and attempting to start the car multiple times. Once the issue was confirmed, the technician began a 15-step diagnostic process to determine the cause of the problem.

The Diagnosis
At Marc’s Garage, our technicians use a 15-step diagnostic procedure to effectively and efficiently find solutions to car problems. Our Audi specialist, Paul, used this method in this case as well.
After conducting a visual inspection and finding nothing unusual, he used a diagnostic tool to run a full vehicle scan and the following code turned up on the search:
- P0684 00 related to the Glow Plug Control Module.
Glow plugs are essential for starting a diesel engine, especially in cold weather. They heat up to assist with ignition and also improve emissions by promoting effective regeneration of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF).
It was clear that the Audi Q5 was not starting due to a malfunctioning component in its engine system. Our Audi specialist, Paul, investigated the problem and found that the glow plug module was the cause.
Despite a visual inspection showing no obvious issues, further testing revealed that there was no signal being sent from the module to the glow plugs. Paul confirmed this by performing electrical tests on the module, which revealed that the feed and earth wires, as well as the wires going to the ECU and glow plugs, were all functioning properly. Therefore, the issue was determined to be with the glow plug module.
The Solution
Our Audi specialist replaced the malfunctioning glow plug control module and retested the system. The replacement module solved the problem, and the Audi Q5 was starting without issues. Paul checked for any remaining fault codes and found none. He then informed the customer of the successful repair and the car was ready to be picked up. The client picked up his vehicle, thanked our Audi technician for the service, and returned home a happy man.
